Welcome to The Children's Art Carnival!

Betty Blayton Taylor

Betty Blayton Taylor, a career artist and pioneer, founded the Children's Art Carnival in 1969 as a place where children would be supported in all of their visual arts endeavors. With classes in sculpture, painting, mixed media and film making for almost forty years, the school has now taught two generations of some families, operating After School and Saturday programs and working in partnership with schools throughout the five boroughs of New York City. The Carnival - as it stands today, 40 years after its inception - began as the vision of one single woman - an artist, trailblazer, and community activist in her own right - Betty Blayton Taylor.

Betty served as Executive Director of The Carnival through 1997, shaping the organization and realizing its mission, while working directly with young artists, helping them to cultivate their talents. At the same time, Betty nurtured a successful career as a professional artist, and she has since exhibited throughout the world and received numerous honors and awards, including the 1984 Empire State Woman of the Year in the Arts; the 1989 New York State Governors Art Award, the 1995 CBS Martin Luther King Jr., Fulfilling the Dream Award; Lifetime Achievement Award from the Women's Caucus for Art in 2005, to name just a few.

Betty continues to serve The Children's Art Carnival in an advisory and support role. On any given day she can be found in her studio creating art; painting or printing at the press.
