The Arts in Education program is made up of three components: The School Day Program, Early Childhood & Special Education and Artists in Residence. The School Day and Early Childhood Programs provide art instruction for children and their teachers and other service agencies, citywide. Each year, numerous schools and agencies, from all five boroughs and with average class sizes averaging 25 to 30 students, travel to The Carnival to receive services through this program. As part of the Arts in Education Program, The Carnival also provides schools and service agencies with Artists-in Residence. In these partnerships, The Carnival’s teaching artists provide art instruction in the classroom for ten weeks, one semester, or full year collaborations, connecting the arts with a variety of curricular, thematic and cultural areas for grades K-12.

After School & Saturday

The Children’s Art Carnival offers workshops throughout the week and on Saturdays to children ages 4-13. These workshops are designed to present a wide variety of artistic techniques in a manner that is both engaging and recreational. All workshops provide hands-on instruction with an emphasis on gaining artistic expertise through learning to understand and express oneself. After School and Saturday programming includes the following workshops: Multi-Media, Creative Arts, Ceramics & Sculpture, and Creative Media Arts.

Communication Arts

The Communication Arts Program (CAP) is a highly competitive program that provides young people, ages 12-21, with pre-professional instruction and experience to prepare them for post-secondary education and career development in the arts. Activities within the program are media-based and are geared toward engaging young people in critical perception and analysis of both art and the world around them. Students develop skills in various mediums and genres including, graphic design, video production, comic illustration, photography, drawing and painting.  Students are selected from each workshop area to participate in a Summer Intensive Program coordinated by NGOA (New Generation of Artists) - a CAC a young artist collective. Through this program, visual, literary, and media arts are used to address social and community concerns.

In the past school year, our CAP/NGOA students produced Back 2 Black, a public event illustrating the legacy of Black writing through visual interpretations of literary works, live performances by spoken word artists and a presentation of the film "Soundz of Spirit".

Community Outreach

The Children’s Art Carnival believes in the power of partnerships and continues to solidify families and engage the public in presentations of culture, community, and creativity. Our Community Outreach programs include special projects, community events, and public programs characterized by the participating families, the community at large, and cultural institutions. Partnerships have included art-making activities with Broadway Housing, Manhattanville Community Center, Children's Aid Society, Brooklyn Careworks, and ML Wilson Boys' & Girls' Club. In addition, The Children's Art Carnival participates in Columbia University and Morningside Park's Annual Common Ground Festival, Harlem One Stop's Annual Pinkster Festival, and the 30th Precinct's National Night Out.
