SUMMARY:LINOLEUM BLOCK PRINTMAKING
DESCRIPTION:PRESS & PULL: HOME COMING SERIES FALL 2023 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLINOLEUM BLOCK PRINTMAKING \nClass Date: Wednesday\, November 8th \nTime: 4:00 – 7:00pm \nVenue: The Children’s Art Carnival \nMax. Participants: 15 \nRegister: CLICK HERE \nThis workshop will guide students through the process of linoleum block printing. Participants will learn how to draw or transfer an image onto a block\, how to use relief carving tools to carve out their image\, and how to properly roll out printing ink onto their blocks to create a linoleum print. The instructor will discuss how to create and print an edition\, having each student leave the workshop with an edition of at least 3 prints. \nLino printing is considered a traditional relief printmaking method and is often referred to as lino cutting. In this technique\, a design is carved into a linoleum block. The uncarved\, raised surface (relief) is then inked using a brayer and printed onto paper or fabric with the aid of a baren. This process enables the production of multiple copies of the same artwork\, known as editions. \nLino printing shares similarities with traditional woodblock printing. However\, linoleum is favoured over wood due to its carving-friendly nature. \nMichele Godwin\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMichele Godwin is a multidisciplinary artist working in printmaking\, textiles\, and ceramics. In 2021\, she was awarded an EFA Blackburn Legacy Fellowship\, a fellowship reserved for artists who worked with Robert Blackburn. She currently teaches relief and collagraph workshops at EFA RBPMW\, where she first began as a printshop monitor in the mid 1980s. Around the same time\, Michele came to the Children’s Art Carnival where she worked with Betty Blayton-Taylor as a teaching assistant. She will be returning to participate in CAC and EFA RBPMW’s collaborative pilot program Press n’ Pull.

The exhibition is presented by The Children’s Art Carnival. \n\nMilagros Batista: Creator of Wearable Art! \nFiber Artist | Master Knitter/Crocheter | Fashion Designer | Social Activist \nPersonal and Artistic Journey \nMilagros Batista is more than a designer; she’s a storyteller weaving tales of resilience\, cultural vibrancy\, and individuality through her wearable art. Born in Puerto Plata\, Dominican Republic\, Milagros draws inspiration from the rich tapestry of her childhood—ocean waves\, bustling markets\, and the aroma of coffee and sugarcane. Growing up during a challenging political era\, Milagros found strength in her family and guidance in the form of Doña Maria Luisa\, a Freedom Fighter and Master Knitter. This mentorship became the foundation of her journey into the world of fiber arts\, knitting\, crochet\, and social justice. \nEarly Influence and Mentorship \nAt seven\, Milagros’ meeting with Doña Maria Luisa marked the beginning of a transformative journey. Hindered by financial constraints\, Milagros proposed a unique arrangement—she’d work for knitting lessons. Doña Maria Luisa\, a fearless advocate against dictatorship\, not only agreed but ignited in Milagros a passion for social change. Doña Maria Luisa’s passing didn’t halt Milagros’ growth; instead\, she became part of a collective of women mentors\, guiding her until her family moved to New York. The vibrant culture of NYC\, coupled with the influence of the “Black is Beautiful” movement\, shaped Milagros’ perspective\, fueling her commitment to equity\, sustainability\, and gender neutrality. \nThe Batista Collections: Brand Bio \nMilagros Batista – Designing for Equity\, Sustainability\, and Gender Neutrality \nA decade ago\, Milagros transitioned careers to dedicate herself entirely to knitting and crochet. In 2016\, she birthed Batista Collections\, challenging preconceptions in high fashion. The resurgence of these crafts during the pandemic amplified her mission\, solidifying their presence in the industry. Milagros’ designs stand out\, incorporating intricate cables reminiscent of braided hair. Pieces like the “Free Spirited” shawl/jacket symbolize freedom and self-expression. As Batista Collections moves forward\, it envisions pushing creative boundaries\, defining a path where fashion meets individuality. \nMission Statement \nAt Batista Collections\, we’re crafting a fashion revolution beyond gender norms. Fashion should liberate\, allowing limitless self-expression. Rooted in inclusivity and authenticity\, our gender-neutral garments empower individuals to embrace their unique identities without fear or limitation. Hindered by financial constraints\, Milagros proposed a unique arrangement—she’d work for knitting lessons. Although he is a true New Yorker at heart\, his sentiments also extend to the Dominican Republic and its rich culture\, the land from which his parents immigrated. Under his artistic moniker\, CruDo\, Domingo creates art that pays homage to both NYC and the DR\, highlighting their organic yet colorful intersections. Specifically\, Domingo is well-versed in the traditions of the Dominican Carnival\, its history\, and the intricate craft of elaborating carnival masks. He conducts numerous workshops on this subject across various institutions in the tri-state area. \nDomingo takes pride in utilizing sustainable materials in his art. In fact\, his artistic name “Crudo” means “raw” in Spanish\, reflecting his penchant for reimagining raw or existing items. His primary materials include reclaimed wood (primarily plywood\, given its often-overlooked nature)\, cloth\, papier-mâché\, acrylic paint\, and acrylic plastic. He blends these materials together\, drawing from his expertise in laser cutting\, carpentry\, and papier-mâché\, to create pieces that not only showcase his artistic prowess but also serve to uplift and educate those who appreciate his work. Additionally\, he actively engages with the community as a cultural and self-love ambassador. \nDomingo fosters connections within the community through an Art Bus that he transformed from a retired mini NYC DOE school bus. This mobile studio and store also serve as a cultural sanctuary on wheels\, which he shares with inner-city youth throughout New York City. \nWith a career spanning several decades\, Domingo has collaborated with esteemed institutions such as the Department of Education\, ExpandED Schools\, Rutgers University\, The Juan Pablo Duarte Foundation\, The BELL Foundation\, and the Alianza Dominicana Cultural Center in Washington Heights.
