SUMMARY:Carnival Mask Making Workshop with Artist Domingo "CRUDO" Cruz
DESCRIPTION:CARNIVAL MASK MAKING WORKSHOP with artist Domingo “CRUDO” Cruz \nOpen to All Ages \nParticipants younger than 10 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. \n(Child drop-off not allowed) \nThis workshop will center on carnival mask-making\, an expression of celebration and freedom across the entire Caribbean and its global diaspora. It’s a time for people to honor their culture while reflecting on the struggles their ancestors endured. \nJoin us for an enjoyable afternoon of mask making with Dominican-American Artist Domingo Cruz\, also known as CruDo. Domingo’s art pays homage to the traditions of the Dominican Carnival\, its rich history\, and the intricate craft of elaborating carnival masks. He conducts numerous workshops on this subject across various institutions in the tri-state area. \nSave your spot: Register with $5 suggested donation or donate-what-you-can \n\n\n \nAbout the featured artist: \nDomingo Cruz was born in Harlem\, raised in Washington Heights\, and currently resides in the South Bronx. Although he is a true New Yorker at heart\, his sentiments also extend to the Dominican Republic and its rich culture\, the land from which his parents immigrated. Under his artistic moniker\, CruDo\, Domingo creates art that pays homage to both NYC and the DR\, highlighting their organic yet colorful intersections. Specifically\, Domingo is well-versed in the traditions of the Dominican Carnival\, its history\, and the intricate craft of elaborating carnival masks. He conducts numerous workshops on this subject across various institutions in the tri-state area. \n\n\n\nDomingo takes pride in utilizing sustainable materials in his art. In fact\, his artistic name “Crudo” means “raw” in Spanish\, reflecting his penchant for reimagining raw or existing items. His primary materials include reclaimed wood (primarily plywood\, given its often-overlooked nature)\, cloth\, papier-mâché\, acrylic paint\, and acrylic plastic. He blends these materials together\, drawing from his expertise in laser cutting\, carpentry\, and papier-mâché\, to create pieces that not only showcase his artistic prowess but also serve to uplift and educate those who appreciate his work. Additionally\, he actively engages with the community as a cultural and self-love ambassador.\n\n\n\n\n\nDomingo fosters connections within the community through an Art Bus that he transformed from a retired mini NYC DOE school bus. This mobile studio and store also serve as a cultural sanctuary on wheels\, which he shares with inner-city youth throughout New York City. \nWith a career spanning several decades\, Domingo has collaborated with esteemed institutions such as the Department of Education\, ExpandED Schools\, Rutgers University\, The Juan Pablo Duarte Foundation\, The BELL Foundation\, and the Alianza Dominicana Cultural Center in Washington Heights. Presently\, Domingo serves as a proud teaching artist for City Lore\, where he imparts his knowledge and experience as an artist to continue making a meaningful impact on the lives of inner-city youth in NYC. \n\n\n\n\nArt Making Workshops @ The Children’s Art Carnival are made possible with funding from West Harlem Development Corporation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Easy! Watercolor - Family with Children
DESCRIPTION:Easy! Watercolor Workshop Series \nJoin us for an afternoon exploring watercolor painting. During these in-person workshops\, you’ll learn how to create watercolor art using various watercolor techniques\, tools\, and materials. The facilitator will also introduce some sample works by master watercolorists for inspiration and show you how she uses watercolor paintings as sketches and visual journals. \nNEW! Starting in April\, we will have two workshops: a 3 to 4:15 p.m. family session and a 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. adult-only session.\nEach workshop lasts about 60 minutes\, but participants can stay to\nwork longer or finish their projects for the extra 15 minutes. \nChildren under 12 must be accompanied by an adult\, but please join as a family. \nNo prior experience is necessary; the projects are designed for all ages and all levels. At the end of each class\, you will have a small painting or two ready to frame and hang on your wall. \nThe CAC will provide the materials and tools; however\, if you prefer to use your own\, please do not hesitate to bring them. \nFor: Families with children and adults\, 10 participants max for each session.\nCost: $5 material fee (or donate-what-you-can for the CAC) \nRegistration is required to participate. See links below. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nSaturday\, June 15\, 2024\nPortrait Hack\n\nFamily with children: 3:00 pm to 4:15 pm (Register)\nAdult only: 4:30 pm to 5:45 pm (Register)\nThere are many techniques for painting portraits.  This workshop will show\nyou one of the easiest ways. The facilitator will demonstrate how to trace lines with pencils\nfrom BW photocopies\, and we will paint within the lines traced on watercolor paper. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the facilitator: \nTomo Mori\nTomo Mori is a native of Japan and a West Harlem-based artist who focuses on fiber art installation and collage. \nTomo learned watercolor rigorously under a master watercolorist from age 14 to 15 to enroll herself at Tokyo Metropolitan High School for Music and Fine Art\, and she was accepted to the school with a perfect score. \nWatercolor is not central to her current art practice; however\, she uses the skill to sketch her ideas or keep a visual journal. When she paints watercolor\, she finds freedom\, lighting her spirit. Perhaps because they are just sketches\, or the medium is easy to manage. Through these workshops she wants to share the joy and therapeutic nature of watercolor painting. \nTomo’s work has been exhibited in various venues like Columbia University\, Scope Miami\, Laundromat Project\, Rush Arts Galleries\, Governors Island\, Newark Museum\, and Christie’s. She received a commission from MTA and completed a laminated glass and metal installation in 2018. She participated in the Winter Workspace Residency at Wave Hill in early 2023. SUMMARY:Easy! Watercolor - the 2nd Saturdays - Adult Only at 4:30pm
\n\nEach workshop lasts about 60 minutes\, but participants can stay to work longer or finish their projects for the extra 15 minutes.\nNo prior experience is necessary; the projects are designed for all ages and all levels. At the end of each class\, you will have a small painting or two ready to frame and hang on your wall.\nThe CAC will provide the materials and tools; however\, if you prefer to use your own\, please do not hesitate to bring them.\nFor: Families with children and adults\, 10 participants max for each session.\nCost: $6 material fee (or donate-what-you-can for the CAC)\nRegistration is required to participate. See links below.\n\n\nSaturday\, September 14\, 2024\nBlurrrrrr! \nFamily with children: 3:00 pm to 4:15 pm \nAdult only: 4:30 pm to 5:45 pm \n\n\n\nThe registration is required to participate: Reserve your spot\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the facilitator: \nTomo Mori\nTomo Mori is a native of Japan and a West Harlem-based artist who focuses on fiber art installation and collage. She is currently working as a studio artist at the Children’s Art Carnival. \nInstagram: @TomoMoriArt \n  \nGallery: See the participants’ works! \n  \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
