SUMMARY:Press and Pull: EFA Printmaking Workshop - Linoleum Block Printing by Yashua Klos
DESCRIPTION:  \nLINOLEUM BLOCK PRINTING is a part of Press and Pull Fall 2024\npartnership with EFA Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop \nDate: Saturday\, Octorber 5th \nTime: 1:00 – 3:00pm \nVenue: The Children’s Art Carnival \nMax. Participants: 15 \nRegistration is required to participate: Reserve your spot now! \n\n\nThis workshop will guide students through the process of linoleum block printing. Participants will carve into linoleum\, ink-up\, and hand print your image multiple times. You will print in different colors using several different hand-pressed printing techniques. Students add to their practice with a whole new toolbox of methods as well as new conceptual approaches to the linocut medium. While some of the primary tenants of traditional block printing are covered\, printmaking operates as a means to facilitate the student’s concept. Students gain knowledge of the fundamentals of linoleum block printmaking: carving\, reproduction\, inking\, etc. \nLino printing is considered a traditional relief printmaking method and is often referred to as lino cutting. In this technique\, a design is carved into a linoleum block. The uncarved\, raised surface (relief) is then inked using a brayer and printed onto paper or fabric with the aid of a baren. This process enables the production of multiple copies of the same artwork\, known as editions. \nLino printing shares similarities with traditional woodblock printing. However\, linoleum is favoured over wood due to its carving-friendly nature. \nRegistration is required to participate: Reserve your spot now! \nYashua Klos\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYashua Klos\nAbout the facilitator: Yashua Klos\n \nIn his multi-media practice\, Yashua Klos explores themes of identity\, memory\, and African Americans’ relationship to American labor. His large-scale works are created from the intricate formation of woodblock prints\, representing ideas of Blackness through multi-dimensional\, fragmented compositions. Unlike traditional collage arranged from ready-made source material\, Klos creates all his collage material through woodblock printing and monotypes. His work reimagines the Black body as an alchemical being\, surviving and existing within intertwined networks of history\, myth\, and lived reality. \nYashua Klos (b. 1977\, Chicago\, IL) received a BFA from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb (2000) and an MFA from Hunter College\, City University of New York (2009)\, both in Fine Art. Recent exhibitions include Building Our Being at Zidoun Bossuyt\, Paris\, FR (2023) and the major solo show Yashua Klos: OUR LABOUR at the Wellin Museum of Art at Hamilton College\, Clinton\, NY (2022) curated by Tracy L. Adler\, and Yashua Klos: OUR LIVING at Center for Maine Contemporary Art\, Rockland\, ME (2022). His work was also included in the group exhibitions Multiplicity: Blackness in Contemporary American Collage at the Frist Art Museum\, Nashville\, TN (2023) and at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston\, TX (2024); Elegies: Still Lifes in Contemporary Art at the Museum of African Diaspora\, San Francisco\, CA (2022); and Africa\, Imagined: Reflections on Modern and Contemporary Art at Kalamazoo Institute of Arts\, MI (2022). His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Seattle Art Museum\, WA\, Kalamazoo Institute of Arts\, MI\, and the Wellin Museum of Art at Hamilton College\, Clinton\, NY. He has been awarded residencies at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts\, BRIC Arts\, the Joan Mitchell Center\, Skowhegan\, and the Vermont Studio Center. Klos is the recipient of a 2014 Joan Mitchell Foundation grant and a 2015 New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship. Klos lives and works in Harlem\, NY\, and the Bronx\, NY\, respectively.

When she paints watercolor\, she finds freedom\, lighting her spirit. Perhaps because they are just sketches\, or the medium is easy to manage. Through these workshops she wants to share the joy and therapeutic nature of watercolor painting. \nTomo’s work has been exhibited in various venues like Columbia University\, Scope Miami\, Laundromat Project\, Rush Arts Galleries\, Governors Island\, Newark Museum\, and Christie’s. She received a commission from MTA and completed a laminated glass and metal installation in 2018. She participated in the Winter Workspace Residency at Wave Hill in early 2023. She is currently working as a studio artist at the Children’s Art Carnival. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nOpen Your Eyes (O.Y.E.) SUMMARY:Virtual: Creating Good Vibes With Your Artist Bio
DESCRIPTION:Artist Bio Workshop For Creatives Facilitated by Richard Burroughs\nClass Dates: Sunday\, November 10 · 1 – 3pm EST \nTime: 1:00 – 3:00pm \nVenue: The Children’s Art Carnival \nThe bio is an important marketing tool and should be carefully crafted to bring the world closer to the artist. It tells the artist’s story\, building a connection between the person reading it and the artist. Unfortunately\, a clumsily written bio can work against an artist. A journalist\, art school\, gallerist\, or buyer can get bad vibes from a bad bio\, so this one-day workshop will show you how to get your vibes right with a bio that works for you. \nWe will talk about: \n\nChoosing/Shooting a bio picture\nWhat to include in an artist bio\nWhat to avoid when writing a bio\nWhen to update your bioAnd other bio-related topics. Expect to be able to write your bio after finishing this workshop.\n\n  \n\nThis event is open to the public. Online registration is required to participate. Suggested donation of $5 or pay-what-you-can. (Register with donation) \n\n\n\n  \nRichard Burroughs\n\n\n\n\nAbout the facilitator: \nRichard Burroughs is multi-hyphenate\, working across multiple industries. He is a journalist for BK Reader\, a digital daily news and information source covering Brooklyn. He covers the Brooklyn Nets\, the NY Liberty\, and sports-related stories\, and writes about music\, fashion\, and culture in Brooklyn. \nMr. Burroughs is an art curator who produces a traveling exhibit called Cover Lover Remix\, a group show where artists remix their favorite album covers. The last exhibition recently closed at Brooklyn Navy Yard and was a 1990s-themed edition of Cover Lover Remix. \nRich also works as an open format DJ\, getting all ages up and dancing at weddings and block parties\, or rocking late-night at bars and restaurants. He was formerly a marketing and PR account executive representing clients such as Coca-Cola\, Benneton\, Adidas\, and Sam Adams. \n\n\n\n\nProfessional Development @ The Children’s Art Carnival are made possible with funding from West Harlem Development Corporation.
