Teachers at my junior high school encouraged me by showcasing my work at PTA meetings\, school openings\, and art fairs. In the 1970s\, I was selected to exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum of Art as part of a showcase of outstanding works by high school students. I was also awarded a special scholarship to study sculpture at Brooklyn College for one year\, where I honed my technique and deepened my understanding of various artistic mediums. \nSince 1984\, my studies at Greenwich House Pottery have opened numerous avenues in the world of functional ceramics and sculpture\, providing exposure to gallery shows and opportunities to sell my work to art collectors. In the 1980s\, I began teaching ceramics and sculpture in both the private sector and New York City government programs\, instructing students of all ages—including children\, adults\, senior citizens\, and individuals who are blind or differently-abled—helping them experience the beauty of art through the sensitivity of their hands. \nTeaching Experience: \n\nSirovich Senior Center (1990s): Taught ceramics for 14 years.\nAssociated Blind\, Inc. (1990–2000): Taught ceramics for 15 years.\nConducted workshops throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn during the 1980s and 1990s.\nVisions for the Blind (late 1990s–early 2000s): Led 12-day workshops at their vacation camp in Spring Valley\, NY\, producing results at the conclusion of each session.This list only scratches the surface of my experience\, but I hope it gives you a sense of my dedication to teaching and creating art.”

DESCRIPTION:October 18\, 12 to 2 pm | Family Photo: Everybody has an old box of photos or negatives of their family members. Students bring in negatives of past and current family and make enlarged prints. Multiple copies can be gifted to others.\n\n\n\nOnline registration is required to participate: Register Now\n. \n  \n\n\n\n\nUpcoming Workshops: \n\n\nSeptember 27 | Photograms for Parent & Child: This is a fun introduction to the darkroom class. Students place objects on photographic paper and expose them to light\, then develop the paper in our darkroom.  The unusual combinations are personal expressions that utilize the student’s intuition. \nOctober 18 | Family Photo: Everybody has an old box of photos or negatives of their family members. Students bring in negatives of past and current family and make enlarged prints. Multiple copies can be gifted to others. \nNovember 15 | Darkroom Open Printing: Students can print what they like. They can print photograms again or combine enlarged negatives with objects for unique photographs.  Students who attend two or more of these workshops begin to see the potential of creating art in a traditional darkroom. \nDecember 20 | Matting: Students provide their own work to be matted in preparation for framing and display.  This class is suitable for attendance by students from multiple disciplines.  A bevel edged window mat (supplied) is cut for each piece and students attach their work.  Photos\, drawings\, collage and old newspaper articles can be matted.  Students leave with pieces mounted and ready to frame. \n\n\n\n\nAbout: Located in the historic Hamilton Heights neighborhood within Harlem\, Hamilton Heights Darkroom (HHD) is dedicated to the preservation of traditional darkroom printing and film photography. Guided by artist-educator Dionis Ortiz\, participants will learn three accessible techniques—blind contour\, contour\, and grid transfer—to build confidence and accuracy while creating a powerful portrait from a personal photo (self or a friend). We’ll focus on seeing over stereotypes: proportion\, placement\, and simple value\, plus an “identity layer” of symbols or text that reflects who you are. Design and craft your very own unique mask—ideal for theater\, cultural celebrations\, or personal storytelling. Experiment with a variety of materials\, explore diverse styles\, and learn artistic techniques to bring your vision to life at the Children’s Art Carnival. Unleash your imagination and make a mask that’s truly one-of-a-kind! \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nAbout the facilitators: \n \nJennifer Ivey  \nJennifer was born in Brooklyn and raised in Queens. She has experienced NYC from a very different urban setting. Her first formal introduction to the art world was attending the Brooklyn Museum Children’s Art program. \n“But I attribute my gift for creating through my father’s passion for theatre and my passion for an eclectic home environment which included original oil paintings by other young artists\,” she stated. \nJennifer was educated in NYC’s finest public schools and graduated from Pratt Institute with a BA in art education. At Pratt Institute\, she studied with William T. Williams and as a graduate student\, she studied with Anthony Tone at the New School. Jennifer has taught art in the public school system and worked as an art consultant. \nJennifer has experimented with multi-medium design. She has made puppets for theatre and feathered jewelry for entertainer Nina Simone and on-air personality Melba Toliver. \nShe continues to find a fascination for facial expressions of people in groups in old photographs and uses them in her artwork. She has exhibited with Black Women of Brooklyn and other environs\, is a member of the Long Island Black Artist Association and Blacker Than Thou Cross Culture. \nJennifer and her husband Rod have two sons. Royal is an NBA coach and Sterling is a health care worker. Moving from Harlem\, they now residue in the laid-back community of Hollis\, NY\, one of the breeding grounds of Hip Hop. \n  \n\n\n\n\n \nDeborah Singletary \nDeborah Singletary’s artwork has appeared in the New Yorker\, “ New Women “ Magazine\, The New York Daily News\, Painting From The Source (Harper Collins )\, Making What Your Means Can’t Buy ( Vision Carriers Press ) and Art’s Buoyant Felicity: An Anthology Art/Creativity Healing (Evolutionary Girls ). She was included in the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture’s major show\, “ Black New York Artist of The 20th Century. “ \n   Much of Deborah’s artwork is inspired by her southern and African roots. She is sought after for her paintings\, assemblages and word wands.  Deborah’s  recent exhibition credits include: WEUSI: Evolution of a Revolution (Akwaaba Gallery\, Newark\, N.J.)\,  Black Joy and Resilience ( Calabar Gallery Harlem\, N.Y. )\, American HooDoo and Southern Black American-Centric Spiritual Ways ( Rush Gallery New York\, N.Y. )\, Her story: Voice\, Vision & Memory ( LeRoy Neiman Art Center Harlem\, N.Y.) and On the Matter of Water ( Kenkeleba Gallery New York\, N.Y.). \nUtilizing her passion and art in her work as an interfaith minister\, Deborah’s work helps pierce the veil separating us from our true selves. As a painter and multimedia artist\, her warm spirit and personality have inspired many to put their hidden artistic talents on display. This welcoming class for teens and adults is designed for two levels: \n\nLevel 1 (Beginners): Learn to use artists’ drawing tools\, get confident\, and discover new ways of seeing and imagining that will result in drawings you are proud of!\n\n\nLevel 2 (Intermediate): For students with some experience who want to go further—bring your own photos\, or receive subjects and style options to explore in class.\n\nAt both levels\, you’ll expand your awareness of what makes a “good drawing\,” have fun discovering your unique artistic style\, and receive 1:1 individualized guidance. \nDon’t miss this empowering program—your inner artist called and they want OUT! Drawing from his experiences as a child born and raised in Harlem of Dominican descent\, he creates geometric\, process-based works from ill-regarded and found materials to celebrate the people of the African diaspora. \nHe was a participant in the Artist in the Marketplace (AIM) Program at The Bronx Museum of the Arts\, received a Rema Hort Mann Artist Community Engagement Grant\, and has been an Artist in Residence at the Children’s Museum of Manhattan. He has produced several solo exhibitions in New York and his work was recently included in Estamos bien: La Trienal 20/21 at El Museo Del Barrio (New York). \nCommunity engagement is central to his practice and he has produced projects for Harlem River Park Fund\, Museum of Art and Design\, and ImageNation. \nIn 2021 he was Artist in Residence at Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art and Storytelling and his mural design was selected by PubliColor for an elementary school in East Harlem. His work has been featured in The New York Times several times and is included in Latinx Art: Artists\, Market\, and Politics by Arlene Dávila. \nThis community work extends to teaching and Ortiz teaches all ages from pre-K to teenagers and undergraduates at Hunter College and Cornell University. \nHe received his B.F.A from SUNY Purchase College and his M.F.A from CUNY Hunter College.

Teachers at my junior high school encouraged me by showcasing my work at PTA meetings\, school openings\, and art fairs. In the 1970s\, I was selected to exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum of Art as part of a showcase of outstanding works by high school students. I was also awarded a special scholarship to study sculpture at Brooklyn College for one year\, where I honed my technique and deepened my understanding of various artistic mediums. \nSince 1984\, my studies at Greenwich House Pottery have opened numerous avenues in the world of functional ceramics and sculpture\, providing exposure to gallery shows and opportunities to sell my work to art collectors. In the 1980s\, I began teaching ceramics and sculpture in both the private sector and New York City government programs\, instructing students of all ages—including children\, adults\, senior citizens\, and individuals who are blind or differently-abled—helping them experience the beauty of art through the sensitivity of their hands. \nTeaching Experience: \n\nSirovich Senior Center (1990s): Taught ceramics for 14 years.\nAssociated Blind\, Inc. When she paints watercolor\, she finds freedom\, lighting her spirit. Perhaps because they are just sketches\, or the medium is easy to manage. Through these workshops she wants to share the joy and therapeutic nature of watercolor painting. \nTomo’s work has been exhibited in various venues like Columbia University\, Scope Miami\, Laundromat Project\, Rush Arts Galleries\, Governors Island\, Newark Museum\, Christie’s and Swann Auction Galleries. She received a commission from MTA and completed a laminated glass and metal installation in 2018. She participated in the Winter Workspace Residency at Wave Hill in early 2023. She is currently working as a studio artist at the Children’s Art Carnival. \n\n\n\n\n \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n

They can print photograms again or combine enlarged negatives with objects for unique photographs.  Students who attend two or more of these workshops begin to see the potential of creating art in a traditional darkroom.\n\n\n\nOnline registration is required to participate: Register Now\n. \n  \n\n\n\n\nUpcoming Workshops: \n\n\nSeptember 27 | Photograms for Parent & Child: This is a fun introduction to the darkroom class. Students place objects on photographic paper and expose them to light\, then develop the paper in our darkroom.  The unusual combinations are personal expressions that utilize the student’s intuition. \nOctober 18 | Family Photo: Everybody has an old box of photos or negatives of their family members. Students bring in negatives of past and current family and make enlarged prints. Multiple copies can be gifted to others. \nNovember 15 | Darkroom Open Printing: Students can print what they like. They can print photograms again or combine enlarged negatives with objects for unique photographs.  Students who attend two or more of these workshops begin to see the potential of creating art in a traditional darkroom. \nDecember 20 | Matting: Students provide their own work to be matted in preparation for framing and display.  This class is suitable for attendance by students from multiple disciplines.  A bevel edged window mat (supplied) is cut for each piece and students attach their work.  Photos\, drawings\, collage and old newspaper articles can be matted.  Students leave with pieces mounted and ready to frame. \n\n\n\n\nAbout: Located in the historic Hamilton Heights neighborhood within Harlem\, Hamilton Heights Darkroom (HHD) is dedicated to the preservation of traditional darkroom printing and film photography. Students use film cameras\, and print from negatives in the darkroom as a basis to learn photography. SUMMARY:Opening Reception Etched in Time by The Unframed Arts Collective
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: November 15\, 2025\, 4 pm to 7 pm. Register with Donation \nEtched in Time considers how identity\, memories\, and ambitions intersect in the creation of art. This exhibition will explore the complexities of time as told through the eyes of our artists\, primarily composed of migrants and folks experiencing housing insecurity. We beg the question\, ‘what remains when time moves on?’ \nEtched in Time will showcase the stories of six distinct featured artists\, and additional artworks from dozens of artists in our community who turn to art as self-expression and healing. This exhibition will also feature children’s works\, leaving reflections of family\, home\, and endless imagination. All works are tangible evidence of lives lived fully\, and of voices that refuse to be forgotten. We demand that these stories not only be remembered\, but also celebrated. \nA diverse range of mediums will be displayed: crocheted pieces to origami sculptures to developed photographs and paper drawings. The artworks date back to the launch of our art programs in 2023\, up until this year as we begin our third year of operation. \nThe Children’s Art Carnival\, a Harlem-based non-profit\, will be hosting Etched in Time. The exhibition will be on view Saturdays and Sundays from November 15th until December 7th from 12 PM – 7 PM. All ticket proceeds will go directly to the featured artists\, in addition to all earnings from sold artworks. \nIf you are a student\, use the student code STUDENT8 for $8 tickets. We believe that art should be accessible for all. Teachers at my junior high school encouraged me by showcasing my work at PTA meetings\, school openings\, and art fairs. In the 1970s\, I was selected to exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum of Art as part of a showcase of outstanding works by high school students. I was also awarded a special scholarship to study sculpture at Brooklyn College for one year\, where I honed my technique and deepened my understanding of various artistic mediums. \nSince 1984\, my studies at Greenwich House Pottery have opened numerous avenues in the world of functional ceramics and sculpture\, providing exposure to gallery shows and opportunities to sell my work to art collectors. In the 1980s\, I began teaching ceramics and sculpture in both the private sector and New York City government programs\, instructing students of all ages—including children\, adults\, senior citizens\, and individuals who are blind or differently-abled—helping them experience the beauty of art through the sensitivity of their hands. \nTeaching Experience: \n\nSirovich Senior Center (1990s): Taught ceramics for 14 years.\nAssociated Blind\, Inc. Her journey to writing began at the kitchen table listening to her grandmother’s stories. She holds a B.A. in Africana Studies from Brooklyn College\, and a MFA in Prose from Mills College. She has received awards from the New York Foundation of the Arts\, the Sustainable Arts Foundation and International Literary Seminars Kenya. She has also received residencies from Under the Volcano Mexico\, Atlantic Center for the Arts and Breadloaf Environmental Writers Conference. She has been published in several anthologies and journals\, including AGNI\, Asterix\, Kweli\, African Voices\, and Hispanic Theological Initiative. She was the 2024 Talk of the Town Resident Artist with El Museo and the NYC Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs. Some of her most enjoyable work has been facilitating writing and movement sessions with youth\, immigrants\, and elders in schools and community centers across NYC. Her free time is spent unrolling her yoga mat in random locations\, going to her son’s basketball games\, and turning everything into stories. She is the author of The Long Amen. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n
