SUMMARY:Photogram for Parent & Child by Hamilton Heights Darkroom
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, February 21\, 12-2 pm\nFor: Parent & Child (6yr +) \nThis is a fun introduction to the darkroom class. Students place objects on photographic paper and expose them to light\, then develop the paper in our darkroom. The unusual combinations are personal expressions that utilize the student’s intuition. \nFee: $12 total (parent & child bundle)\nMax participants: 6 people (3 families)\n\nOnline registration is required to participate: Register Now\n. \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFacilitators: Michael Macioce and Lenore Browne \nMichael Macioce is a founder and the instructor at the Hamilton Heights Darkroom. Practicing photography from his East Village studio since 1982\, he is known for combining fine art and documentary photography of the downtown music and art scenes. \nA graduate of The School of Visual Arts (1990) Michael’s teaching career began at Parsons School of Design in 1994. He has taught photography at The New School\, The School of Visual Arts and The Educational Alliance before founding The Hamilton Heights Darkroom. \nHe has exhibited at many galleries in the US and Japan\, has had work shown in the Jewish Museum of Paris and was a featured photographer at the New York Photo Festival 2010 at St. Ann’s Warehouse\, where he lectured an “Photographing Unseen New York.” \nYou can see his work at his website macioce.org and his instagram @maciocephotography \n  \nLenore Browne started using a film camera after graduating high school. Although she later received business-related degrees\, her passion lies with film photography and printing in a traditional darkroom. In her first attempt to display her photographs\, Browne’s “Life Lines” was selected in a juried competition for exhibition at the Pen and Brush Gallery\, in Greenwich Village\, by Daile Kaplan\, Vice President and Director of Photographs of the Swann Galleries\, May 2009. Thereafter\, she began documenting Harlem as it evolves through its Second Renaissance. Browne’s Harlem photographs have exhibited at Hamilton Landmark Galleries\, Symphony Space\, Harlem Hospital\, Columbia University Barrie Russ\, Harlem Fine Arts Show and the New York Public Library. \nBrowne is a founder and Board Member (President) of the Hamilton Heights Darkroom whose nonprofit mission is to provide photography and darkroom printing experience to youth and adults in the Harlem Community. \n\n\n. \n \n\n\n\n\nAbout Hamilton Heights Darkroom:\nLocated in the historic Hamilton Heights neighborhood within Harlem\, Hamilton Heights Darkroom (HHD) is dedicated to the preservation of traditional darkroom printing and film photography. Students use film cameras\, and print from negatives in the darkroom as a basis to learn photography. HHD offers photography basics and darkroom printing for youth\, teens and adult printers\, from beginner level to advanced. \nAs darkrooms\, photography and public school arts programs disappear\, HHD strives to preserve both culture and photography in the Harlem community. HHD offers group printing classes\, photography classes (film and digital) and discussion about current photography issues in a collegial setting. HHD collaborates with local community arts and culture organizations seeking youth and adults interested in photography. \n  \nHamilton Heights Darkroom Workshops and all programs at The Children’s Art Carnival are made possible with funding from West Harlem Development Corporation\, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council\, the Ruth Foundation for The Arts and donations from New York Film Academy. \n\n\n\n\n\n

Teachers at my junior high school encouraged me by showcasing my work at PTA meetings\, school openings\, and art fairs. In the 1970s\, I was selected to exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum of Art as part of a showcase of outstanding works by high school students. I was also awarded a special scholarship to study sculpture at Brooklyn College for one year\, where I honed my technique and deepened my understanding of various artistic mediums. \nSince 1984\, my studies at Greenwich House Pottery have opened numerous avenues in the world of functional ceramics and sculpture\, providing exposure to gallery shows and opportunities to sell my work to art collectors. In the 1980s\, I began teaching ceramics and sculpture in both the private sector and New York City government programs\, instructing students of all ages—including children\, adults\, senior citizens\, and individuals who are blind or differently-abled—helping them experience the beauty of art through the sensitivity of their hands. \nTeaching Experience: \n\nSirovich Senior Center (1990s): Taught ceramics for 14 years.\nAssociated Blind\, Inc. (1990–2000): Taught ceramics for 15 years.\nConducted workshops throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn during the 1980s and 1990s.\nVisions for the Blind (late 1990s–early 2000s): Led 12-day workshops at their vacation camp in Spring Valley\, NY\, producing results at the conclusion of each session. This list only scratches the surface of my experience\, but I hope it gives you a sense of my dedication to teaching and creating art.”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2025 Student works. We are so proud!\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration is required to participate: Reserve your spot now!

SUMMARY:Linoleum Block Printing - Carve\, Press\, Repeat! - CAC PRESS & PULL
DESCRIPTION:Linoleum Block Printing – Carve\, Press\, Repeat! \nFacilitator: Alannah Sears \nClass Date: Saturday\, March 7 \nTime: 1:00 – 4:00 pm \nVenue: The Children’s Art Carnival \nMax. Participants: 15 \nAges 12+ (under 18 must be accompanied by an adult). \nAdult: $10\nParent with One Child: $14\nParent with Two Children: $18 \nRegistration is required to participate: Save your spot today! \n\nAlannah Sears \nEver wanted to create your own pattern or custom stamp? This workshop will show you how! \nParticipants will learn the art of linoleum carving (block printing) and hand-printing techniques to transfer their small\, simple designs onto fabric. Bring clothes\, tote bags\, or extra fabric to print on during the session. \nTip: Carving takes time\, so come prepared with a simple design to make sure you have enough time to print. \nAbout the process:Lino printing is a traditional relief printmaking technique\, often called lino cutting. It involves carving a design into a linoleum block using a sharp tool called a lino cutter. The raised (uncarved) areas are then inked with a brayer and printed onto paper or fabric using a baren or spoon. This method allows you to create multiple prints (called editions) of your artwork. \nWhile we’ll touch on traditional block printing principles\, this workshop is designed to help you develop your concept and understand the fundamentals of linoleum block printmaking—carving\, inking\, and creating reproductions. \n \n\n\n\nAbout the facilitators: \n \n Alannah Sears is a Brooklyn-based artist who investigates the complexities of the female experience through delicate graphite drawings. Her work challenges traditional representations of the female form\, creating figures that defy gravity and conventional notions of beauty. These figures contort\, elongate\, squeeze\, and fold in uncanny or impossible ways\, embodying an ethereal beauty through the delicate interplay of light and shadow. She has exhibited her work at CUE Art Foundation\, and Paradise Palace\, and has been awarded residencies at the Joan Mitchell Center\, Joan Mitchell Foundation (NY)\, and Vermont Studio Center. \nRegistration is required to participate: Save your spot today! \n\n\n\nCAC PRESS & PULL is a community-based printshop at The Children’s Art Carnival (CAC) in West Harlem\, grounded in equity\, access\, and experimentation. Inspired by the legacy of Robert Blackburn and Betty Blayton-Taylor\, the program emphasizes non-traditional and accessible printmaking techniques that prioritize process\, collaboration\, and creative independence.

SUMMARY:Easy! Watercolor - for Families with Kids
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, March 15\, 3:00 to 4:15 pm – Families with Kids\, 4:30 to 5:45 pm – Adults. \nEvery session is a little adventure\, as facilitator Tomo Mori introduces a new project and fresh techniques to try. There’s always something fun and different to explore\, and absolutely no need to stress about making a mess—CAC is all about creating and experimenting at your own pace. Painting\, especially with watercolors\, is a soothing experience—whether you love watching colors swirl and blend or simply enjoy the calming motion of your brush. Additionally\, some new projects explore the art of paper weaving and dyeing. \n\n\nThe 3 pm class is perfect for children ages 4 to 12 (and their families)\, while the 4:30 pm session offers a slightly more challenging experience for those ready for a bit more. No matter which class you join\, Tomo is happy to help anyone who wants to dive deeper into their art and get creative. \nWe’ll play with a variety of materials: watercolor ink\, tube and acrylic paints\, markers\, pencils\, Sumi ink\, masking tape\, stencils\, salt\, sponges\, and even bubbles! \nCome unwind in our painting workshop—a relaxed\, creative space open to all ages! \nMarch 15: Playing with textures. Get ready to dive into fun watercolor techniques that’ll add cool textures to your art! We will try 4-5 techniques to create textures using salts\, hand sanitizer\, bubble wrap\, cardboard\, combs\, and other everyday items. \nFor: All ages. Children must be accompanied by an adult. (Drop off not allowed)\nMax Participants: 15 \nFees:\nIndividual (adult) $5\nParent and One Child $7\nParent with Two Children $9\nParent with Three Children $11\nOr\, donate-what-you-can \n60 mins class + 15 mins to clean up or catch up\nWear ready-to-make-art clothes\, or bring old T-shirts/art aprons. Some aprons are available. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration is required to participate: Save your spot today! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\nAbout the facilitator: \nTomo Mori\, originally from Japan\, is a West Harlem-based artist specializing in fiber art installations and collage. From ages 14 to 15\, Tomo studied watercolor rigorously under a master watercolorist\, preparing herself to enroll at Tokyo Metropolitan High School for Music and Fine Art\, where she was accepted with a perfect score. \nAlthough watercolor is not central to her current art practice\, Tomo uses the medium to sketch ideas and maintain a visual journal. When she paints with watercolor\, she experiences a sense of freedom and an uplifted spirit—perhaps because the works are only sketches or because the medium is easy to get started with and to clean up. Through these workshops\, she aims to share the joy and therapeutic qualities of watercolor painting. \nTomo’s work has been exhibited at venues such as Columbia University\, Scope Miami\, The Laundromat Project\, Rush Arts Galleries\, Governors Island\, Newark Museum\, Christie’s\, and Swann Auction Galleries. In 2018\, she completed a laminated glass and metal installation commissioned by the MTA. She participated in the Winter Workspace Residency at Wave Hill in early 2023 and currently works as a studio artist at the Children’s Art Carnival. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nRegistration is required to participate: Save your spot today! \nUPCOMING WORKSHOPS \nApril 19: Sumi Ink painting. Sumi ink is a traditional black ink used in East Asian calligraphy and painting (sumi-e). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Easy! Watercolor - for Families with Kids
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, April 19\, 3:00 to 4:15 pm – Families with Kids\, 4:30 to 5:45 pm – Adults. \nFor: All ages. Practicing photography from his East Village studio since 1982\, he is known for combining fine art and documentary photography of the downtown music and art scenes. \nA graduate of The School of Visual Arts (1990) Michael’s teaching career began at Parsons School of Design in 1994. \nOnline registration is required to participate: Register Now
