Portraits As You Are, For Who You Are
Date: Thursday, October 23, 2025, 4:30–6:00 pm
Instructor: Dionis Ortiz
Location: The Children’s Art Carnival, 62 Hamilton Terrace, NYC
Cost: FREE (donation appreciated!)
Summary:
This mixed-level drawing workshop centers truth, dignity, and joy—countering the distorted media narratives often placed on Black girls and women. Guided by artist-educator Dionis Ortiz, participants will learn three accessible techniques—blind contour, contour, and grid transfer—to build confidence and accuracy while creating a powerful portrait from a personal photo (self or a friend). We’ll focus on seeing over stereotypes: proportion, placement, and simple value, plus an “identity layer” of symbols or text that reflects who you are. No prior drawing experience required—techniques are scaffolded for all levels.
Bring/Submit: Email Dortizstudio@gmail.com an 8×10-ready head-and-shoulders photo (JPG/PNG, minimum 1500px) by Wednesday, October 22nd. If drawing someone else, please confirm permission.
