Participants will create a collagraph plate from recycled cardboard and other thin materials. We will apply three water-based ink colors using brayers then print the plates by hand with the use of home-made barens.

‘Collagraph’ is derived from the Greek ‘colla’, meaning glue, and ‘graph,’ meaning to draw. A collograph is essentially a collage of materials of various textures glued on to a printing plate, often a thin wood or cardboard.

Michael Kelly Williams

Michael Kelly Williams is a multidisciplinary artist. His art practice consists of sculpture and works on paper, including fine art prints. He graduated with a B.F.A. in printmaking from the University of Michigan in 1975 and went on to study and teach in New York City at Robert Blackburn’s Printmaking Workshop from 1979 to 1994. He taught at the Children’s Art Carnival from 1979 to 1986. Williams was Artist-in-Residence at The Studio Museum in Harlem from 1986 to 1987. He attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 1988 and graduated in 1996 with an M.F.A. in Sculpture from Brooklyn College. His prints can be found in several museums and institutions, such as The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, NY; The Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.; The Detroit Institute of Arts, MI; and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, PA. His prints have been exhibited in China, Morocco, Canada, India and Japan. He is the recipient of the first Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop Legacy Publishing Fellowship at the Elizabeth Foundation in 2017 and was awarded a Pollock-Krasner Grant in 2018-19.
